Reach for the Stars!
This week in The Art Room our creative adventures took us far beyond the garden and completely out of this world! Inspired by Space Day, (2 May 2026) we changed our viewpoint completely and, having previously explored the world from ground level, this time, we looked up to the stars, imagining colourful galaxies, twinkling constellations and distant planets that stretched across the universe.
To begin their artworks, we encouraged the children to create their own unique views of space by using thinned down washes of acrylic paint over a black painted background; layering rich, lustrous colours and adding splatters of white paint everyone formed clusters of sparkling stars and a real sense of depth across their night skies.
Next, we employed the wax-transfer technique to create a constellation design in the shape of an animal. Having covered the back of their sheets with white wax crayon, the children carefully traced over the front of their image with a sharp pencil to transfer intricate constellation shapes onto black sheets of paper. Delicate white pencil details were added to help each constellation gleam more brightly before being cut out and arranged into their cosmic scenes.
To finish, the children added extra stars and created colourfully decorated planets, adding texture and interest with sponges, bubble wrap and scrunched up pieces of foil that produced various mottled paint effects.
We were in awe of the distinctive set of stars that shimmered in each celestial artwork full of colour, texture, imagination and wonder. But it was the collective spirit of exploration that shone most brightly in The Art Room this week. What a bunch of stars you are!
