Oceans of Creativity

This week in The Art Room, we took a dive into the Deep Blue to celebrate World Ocean Day with a relaxing and creative watercolour session inspired by the wonder and diversity of life beneath the waves.

Last week, we imagined soaring high above the clouds, looking down at the landscape from far away; this week, we changed our perspective completely, plunging into the ocean depths for an underwater adventure to get up close to fish and other fascinating marine creatures. The children had lots of fun with two activities designed to further develop their watercolour techniques while exploring a host of ocean-themed imagery.

First, everyone experimented with the wet-on-wet method, allowing colours to softly spread, blend, and merge across damp sheets of paper to create organic fishy shapes, coral, seaweed and other animal forms. Once dry, the children carefully added extra colour, shimmering highlights, and fine black pen details, bringing shoals of fish, floating jellyfish, graceful seahorses, powerful sharks, majestic whales, and other marine creatures to life.

In the second activity, the children painted seascapes onto dry paper, achieving stronger shapes, bolder colours, and greater definition in their aquatic creatures. Experimenting with different brushstrokes and mixes of paint, everyone worked hard to bring different effects to their seascapes.

We loved seeing the incredible diversity of artwork produced, with each child bringing their own unique combination of colours, patterns, and imaginative sea life to their watery compositions. The finished pieces were full of movement and atmosphere, combining soft, flowing watercolour effects with eye-catching detail that created a beautiful, luminous impression of life beneath the ocean’s surface.
