Creativity is contagious…
“Creativity is contagious, pass it on” is a phrase attributed to Albert Einstein and one which we wholeheartedly believe in at The Art Room. Each week we aim to inspire our little community of young artists to embrace their creativity and, through self-expression, imagination and innovation, unlock their potential for growth and happiness.
For this week’s activities we simply could not pass up the opportunity to celebrate the ideas behind National Creativity Day, which this year fell during half term, and encourage curiosity about the world around us whilst having fun thinking outside the box.
Our afterschool classes played a Creativity Card game by selecting 5 different category cards – animal, action, object, food and a miscellaneous lucky dip – as prompts for their artworks. Each child was given free choice of materials and with no rules on how to execute their work, other than to have fun with the combination and representation of their chosen elements, everyone enjoyed the playful process of letting their creative juices flow. We were treated to wonderful creations such as ice-cream eating flamingos, balancing umbrellas atop a volcano and a baguette-nibbling ‘bubble-bunny’ in a cactus filled desert. A crazy cornucopia of joy and colour!
The Art Room was alive with enthusiasm and it was brilliant to see the confidence with which the children worked throughout the day. Although less surreal in subject, our preschooler art was just as colourful and produced in the same spirit of exploration and self-expression. Using Claude Monet’s Bridge over a Pond of Waterlilies as inspiration for their own ‘magic’ bridge paintings, each child was encouraged to mix different paint colours to fill their painting board before removing tiny strips of masking tape that revealed the negative space of an arching bridge.
Thank you everyone for getting creative in The Art Room and sharing all your wonderful ideas so generously.
