Busy Bees
The Art Room buzzed with creativity, industry and teamwork this week as our young artists explored the natural phenomenon of the beehive to create vibrant honeybee paintings inspired by World Bee Day.
Using hexagonal pieces of paper similar to honeycomb shapes, the children created beautiful bee artworks beginning with light pencil sketches of the insect’s body before bringing them to life with watercolour paints. During the session, we demonstrated how to mix and gradually build up colour, encouraging the children to experiment with the soft, fuzzy effects that occur when wet paints merge together. We also explored the use of delicate watercolour washes to create thin, transparent layers, perfect for capturing the lightness of the bees’ wings. Some of our older artists tried out the dry brush technique to create minute painted marks to give the effect of very fine fluffy hairs adding detail and texture to their work. We loved hearing all the fabulous bee facts the children were keen to share as we chatted together throughout the session and enjoyed seeing how they incorporated some of these details into their designs.
To finish, everyone embellished their hexagonal honeycomb background in their own unique way, and at the end of the class we combined all of the individual pieces to create one collaborative beehive collage - a wonderful reminder of how creativity and teamwork can create something truly special.
